Python script to harvest pictures from specific Instagram accounts.

As a Raspberry Pi owner I am always tinkering and trying to think of new things to do with it.

I had the idea to write a script to download all pictures from some of my favorite Instagram users.

I wanted it to...

1) Download from a simple list of multiple users
2) Download all pictures even on multiple pages.
3) Ensure that it's always downloading the high-res version of the image.
4) Stop downloading once it reaches an image it has already downloaded.
5) Send me a notification of what if any new downloads are available.

So I set out writing it and below is the results of my efforts.

It isn't pretty, I can't guarantee it won't crash, and if Instrgram tweak their code base too much the scraping will probably break but here it is in all it's glory, hopefully some other users might find it useful.

NOTE: this will only download from public Instagram accounts.

New game for Android, Diced!

Diced is a simple but addictive puzzle game,

The faces of which must add up to the number in the "to win" box.
If the dices add up correctly, they'll vanish.
Remove all the dice and you'll access the next level.

De-lite for Android!

Apologies for the delay on posting, I've been spending most of my days recently either behind the camera or with my Daughter. however, I recently discovered an AMAZING piece of development software for android that really fired me up again, and encouraged me to write this post.

The software? its called b4a (basic4android) and as the name suggests is just that, a VB like IDE for developing for android devices.

I have tried many many routes to creating a game for android and mostly fell foul of the overly complex set-ups before you can even begin writing code. That is absolutely a thing of the past with this software.

From install to publishing on Google play store took just a few days. and now I know the system I imagine I could do a game within a day! Anyway, please check out the game!

easynews zip queue downloader...

Hi All,

if any of you have an easynews account (and an n900) you can use this python script to automatically download any files in Queue 1.

Its smart enough to determine if you have already downloaded a file and will not download the files again and again.

it doesn't download the zip file but the files within it.

Hope this is of some use to people.

Theres life in the ol' girl (N900) yet....

Hi All,

Its been a while since I posted, I'm afraid I was drawn to the dark side and purchased a Samsung Galaxy S2.its a fantastic phone but thats not the point of this thread.

I recently rewired my home network and decided I wanted to get a VPN appliance, but they are amazingly expensive...so I thought about a sheeva plug pc running linux with SSH tunelling...but even though they are small pcs, they are still pretty bulky and expensive.

and then I spied out of the corner of my eye, my N900, gathering dust in my office drawer.

After a good long charge the device booted up, I had already installed ssh so it was ready to go!

I removed all non required apps and settings, IE email accounts and facebook etc.

I then disabled powersaving on the wifi (as that tends to limit incoming connections)

and now it sits there providing me a loverly SSH vpn system, with a full pyhon interpreter (which I have written an automatic easynew downloading tool)

it has lynx on there for an emergency bit of text based browsing.

I also installed X11VNC so I can remote in and control the phone should I need to.

it also acts as a 32GB online storage device, and using truecrypt gives me full encryption of that storage should the device get stolen!

I have a cheap timer plug which switches charging off for a few hours every day to allow the battery to drain.

I'd love to hear others ideas of what I could add?

BounceBounce, a Doodle-Jump Clone

Hi Everyone,

I'm pleased to announce my latest game, this was a popular request from the talkmaemo website.

BounceBounce is a simple accelerometer controlled game, simply bounce your fella as high as possible. Different blocks have different bounce properties and watch out for the bad guy too!

Paper Toss N900

I've been playing with Python and Pygame over the last few days and decided to make a version of the best thing that is available for Android.

Now you can play Paper Toss without having to install Nitdroid, although you should still do that anyway :)

Its packaged as a zip file, simply extract to a folder on your n900 (preferably under your mydocs folder) and then launch the python file from xterm with "python game.py"

Your N900 as karaoke machine...

Hi All,

It's been a while since I have made anything since I have recently been made redundant and am trying to find work, as you can imagine its been really draining me.

however I thought I'd let you all know about this software I wrote a while back that lets you convert karaoke files (CDG+MP3) into mpg files which play on the N900.

Plug it into a TV and you have a Karake machine in your pocket!

Theres no way to add a mic but that just means you have to sing a bit louder :)

Sensitive Motion, for the N900...

Hi All,

Still fuelled by my love of this new device I decided to completely re-write Sensitive, this time to use the accelerometer.

So its now available in the extras-testing repo, the usual warnings apply to any app from that repo. I fully redesigned all the graphics and levels too and added some new blocks.

The idea is the same as always, roll your player around the level crossing/breaking all the ice-blocks on your way to the exit block. you must destroy every ice-block before you can exit.

Watch out for teleporters, double strength blocks, one-way blocks and conveyor belts too!

The game contains 24 predesigned levels but also includes a level editor for you to create up to 24 custom levels!

This game is totally free but a few donations wouldn't go amiss :)

New Phone, New Game....

Hi All,

I have recently got my hands on Nokia's amazing N900.

I decided to try to make a quick game for it.

The game is called "De-lite" and is a remake of the tiger electronics game called "Lights Out"

PyS60 TXT2CBZ convertor...

Hi All,

I had a request to let TouchComic also read txt files. it's not something that TouchComic will probably ever do but in the mean time (just as a programming challange) I created TXT2CBZ,

This little PyS60 app lets you choose a txt file on your phone and will create a CBZ file from the contents.

Its not very fast and doesn't have any fancy options (although you can change them as much as you like in the source code)

its creates as many pages as required and zips them up into a CBZ

its only been tested on a n97 and I am sure I have missed a few bugs but thought some people may like to have a play anyway.

touchcomic 1.7

Hi Everyone,

Its been a few weeks so I thought I'd update TC big time!

In this version I have removed the lock/unlock facility as now you can select seperate folders it means that the password function was no longer needed.

I have now added:

* Double buffering, to reduce image sheering
* improved kinetic scrolling algorithm
* on screen buttons to make navigation more intuitive
* removed double taps and gestures as these were not very reliable
* added translucency for buttons
* added hardware button capture for N97 (camera button, single press) this button can also be programmed in the settings to either enable the magnifying tool, or to skip to next page.
* changed color scheme for loading screen
* added different scaling quality options to improve page swapping times.
* config file is now version dependent
* additional keyboard shortcuts for N97 (up, down and Z key to use magnifying tool)
* toggle fit to width direct from menu as well as settings.
* a whole bunch of bug fixes including the autobookmarking not working and app hanging on exit.
* search option within file open dialog
* Show read/unread flag in file open dialog (optional)

for 5800/omniaHD users you can enable the magnifying by clicking the top/left of the screen (where the page numbers are if you have them enabled)

The N97 has a duel press camera button, of which Python can detect the first level press and so I have added this and made it programmable in the settings. I have tried to map the volume up and down keys as many people have requested but its just not possible in the current versions of python.

As you can see I have put a huge amount of work into this app, as such I'd like to ask any of the users of this to help me out a bit.

Python & Accelerometer tests...

Yesterday I was playing with Python and came up with two new "apps".

Both are pretty useless but I had fun creating them anyway and thought I'd share the results.

The first "App" is a simulated 3D (holographic type) view of a 2D image, using the accelerometer to determine rotation etc.



the second is a classic "Unlimited Bob" routine but this time controlled by the accelerometer instead of sine tables :)

TouchComic 1.6 Update

Hi All,

I decided to add some requested features into this this release.

The changes are:

1) "Kinetic scrolling"
2) Option to select drive AND FOLDER (comics can be stored on any drive AND FOLDER now)
3) Proper Icon instead of Python default (this wasn't requested)

To enable change one I had to remove the ability to "slide" pages, so to move to next or previous pages you should either double click to the left or right of the screen (5800/n97) or use the left or right keys (n97 only)

Slayradio...

Hi All,

I'm still awaiting a S60 5th edition version of internet radio so in the mean time I decided to make a quick Slayradio player for my N97.

Slayradio is (IMHO) the best internet radio station EVER, playing a constant mix of the best C64 remixes.

Its still a very early version, it has little or no error checking, and you use at your own risk but...

If you want to use it you can.

Please note this was written in Python and so requires the latest runtimes, tested successfully on 1.9.7.

BoomShine S60 Game...

Hi All,

Just a quick note to say I was playing a great game by Danner Miller the other day and decided it would make a great N97 game, So I contacted Danny and asked his permission to do it.

I wrote the entire thing from scratch but kept the look and feel exactly the same as the original version.

I've added a leaderboard function so if you wish to submit your score once (or IF) you complete the game you will receive worldwide recognition of having too much time on your hands :)

TouchComic 1.5 Update

Hi All,

Due to the release of version 1.9.7 of Python and to take advantage of my new N97 I decided to make a little update for TouchComic.

The Changes are:

1) Configuration Files moved to C:\
2) Option to select drive (comics can be stored on any drive now)
3) N97 Key press support (Left and Right to switch pages, select button to toggle menu)
4) Automatically move to next/previous CBZ file when flipping last page.
5) Fixed to work with latest python run-times (1.9.7)

TouchComic 1.4 update

Hi All,

Thanks for all the positive comments etc, I have tried to include a few of them in this release.

There are 3 main new features in version 1.4, they are

1) Double-tap the side of the screen now to also skip pages
2) Index page (found under navigation menu) this shows a list of all files in the zip so you can skip to it easily
3) Hidden file mode, now you can hide comics from prying eyes, for example I have some very violent comics which I would not want my kids to see, but they often use my phone to read futurama comics, this function allows me to hide certain files unless the software is "unlocked" with a password.

To hide a .cbz all you need to do is rename it to .abz, the software will no longer see the file, until you unlock it using the unlock menu.

You can change the password to something other than the default, which is "password" once you unlock the system.

You can manually 're-lock' the files for opening or simply shut down TouchComic when you next open it will be locked.

Obviously this is not a 100% secure method of protection but it is simply designed to separate access for certain files.
